Moon's HauntedHi, everyone! Welcome to the April full moon—it’s still hanging in the sky as I write this, which means I’m technically on time. Here’s what’s new:
Current PhaseYou may have noticed I skipped February and March. That’s because… there wasn’t much writing. February was a blur, and March vanished into the school fundraiser (which was a success—we raised $10,000!) But! I did have one truly excellent moon-related experience. During the March full moon, we had a total lunar eclipse in the Bay Area. I woke up at 2:45 AM, bundled my equally enthusiastic kindergartener into the car, and drove around hunting for a patch of sky that wasn’t completely fogged in. (This is a normal and reasonable thing to do.) It paid off: we saw the moon’s last crescent sliver vanish, and a rusty weirdling glow swelled over the moon’s whole surface. Pretty cool moment, especially with a small, sleepy, awestruck kiddo. As for the WIP: very little progress. Fundraiser season took everything I had. I’m only just now starting to rebuild routines and coax my attention span back into existence. The Most Dangerous Writing App helps—if you pause before the timer's up, it deletes everything you've written. Terrifying! But it cuts through hesitation like nothing else. Next PhaseI want to get some short fiction back out on submission this spring... once I've recovered. In the meantime, I’m following the energy where it exists, which currently means low-stakes, slightly chaotic King’s Quest 7 fanfiction. It turns out I have strong opinions about a certain deeply incorrect romance arc, and I’m fixing it. (Rosella shoulda married the troll king, not the fairy prince.) It’s not what I planned, but it's writing.
Rosella steals a look at Otar's soup, but it looks perfectly normal: a creamy, fragrant truffle soup without a spider, rat, or lizard in sight. Maybe he doesn't like that sort of thing? Or maybe he’s just being polite… which means if she wants to be polite around his people, she’s going to have to learn to eat bugs.
Registration just opened for 4th Street Fantasy, so I'll be in Minneapolis over Father’s Day weekend—if you’re going, I’d love to say hello. LACon/Worldcon is a solid “hopefully"—the timing is challenging, but I've never been to a Worldcon and I really want to go. It's not until August, so we'll see. For now, the goal is simple: write regularly, finish things, and try to have fun along the way.
Next full moon: May 1, 2026
Reading: The Northern Caves by nostalgebraist
Wish: a writing routine that survives contact with reality
