Ten Thousand Objects + Two Kittens

Hi, moongazers! Happy Sukkot and Chuseok and whichever full-moon-themed holidays you may celebrate at this time of year! I’m a little late this time, but:

  • I unstuck the novel!
  • New family members 👀
  • I'm going to WFC!

Current Phase

First: I got unstuck on The Viper Crowned in Moonlight!

I have been battling half a dozen scenes for weeks because I found a place where the worldbuilding was just unacceptably thin, and I just... kept outlining until I ground to a halt.

I complained about it to my therapist—I think I”m really actually blocked, I can’t write anything, it’s been ages—and she squinted at me and then asked me 1) how many objects were on my desk (approximately 10,000) and 2) how many of them were writing-related (like, six). I cleaned my desk, found an old scented candle I used to light while writing, lit it, opened my writing document, and realized that I’d been wildly overcomplicating my worldbuilding issue. It’s fixed now. I can just write. I can just write!

At least the Hall of Illuminated Silk was pretty. A short staircase; two stories with verandas running around the building; deep, swooping eaves like the lunate wings of a swift. A soft spring rain began to fall as we passed beneath those eaves, dappling the flagstones and beading on the rail. We passed through a lobby of sorts, down a hall, and up to the second floor, where Viruvang opened a sliding door. Inside were two beds. A girl sat cross-legged on one, a string of beads in her hand. She opened her eyes when we entered.

I am showing you a paragraph of raw unedited draft because I can write again!!

Quick Pic

I adopted kittens!!!!!!!!!! I've been thinking about kittens since January, but various life events conspired to make it impossible until a library pop-up adoption event basically shoved them in my lap. Meet Alex and Elsa. They're still settling in, but I managed a picture:

Looking Ahead

I’m attending the World Fantasy Convention in Oakland next month! I live in Oakland so it would be absurd not to go. It’s October 22-25, and I’m most likely to be there on Sunday morning, when they run the book fair. Maybe some antiquarian will have a medium old William Morris for me, who knows?

Separately, I'm still hoping to finish this draft of Viper by Halloween, but the block ate a lot of time and the kittens are eating some too. I'm thinking this might be the year I stop making the kids' Halloween costumes by hand. I'll keep you updated; there's one more newsletter between now and my self-imposed deadline.

Next full moon: October 26, 2026
Reading: Sky Daddy by Kate Folk (it’s about a woman who wants to marry a plane)
Mood: bubbly

See you next time the moon's full!
